Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test or TANCET

Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test or TANCET is in an entrance examination conducted every year by Anna University, Chennai on behalf of Tamil Nadu Government for admission of students to various Master’s Degree courses like MBA, MCA, M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. offered at University Departments of Anna University at Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Tirunelveli, Government and Government Aided Engineering, Arts & Science Colleges and Government Quota seats in Self-financing Engineering, Arts & Science Colleges including stand alone Institutions. Some Universities and Self-Financing Engineering Colleges may also opt to admit the students on the basis of TANCET.
TANCET Exam Paper for students applying for admission to M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. is a 2 hour paper consisting of three parts: Part I, Part II and Part III. Part I and Part II section of the Paper is compulsory for all candidates. Part I has 30 multiple choice objective type questions from ‘Engineering Mathematics’. One mark is awarded for every right answer and 1/4th mark is deducted for every wrong answer. Maximum marks that can be scored in Part I is 30. Part II has 45 multiple choice objective type questions from ‘Basic Engineering & Sciences’ with the same marking pattern as mentioned above. Maximum marks that can be scored in Part II is up to 30.
The section Part III of the paper provides a choice to the students to choose any one section out of 14 based on his/her specialization. The questions will be set at the undergraduate level. Part III has a total of 40/45 multiple choice objective type questions with the same marking pattern as Part I and Part II. Maximum marks that can be awarded to a candidate in Part III is up to 40.
The TANCET Syllabus for students applying for admission to M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. is based on the study done at graduation level.
The Syllabus for ‘Engineering Mathematics’ part includes specified sections and/or chapters from Determinants and Matrices, Calculus and ordinary Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Vector Calculus, Analytic Function Theory and Numerical Methods.
The Syllabus for ‘Basic Engineering & Sciences’ part includes specified sections and/or chapters from Fundamentals of Applied Mechanics, Basic Mechanical Engineering, Fundamentals of Physics, Fundamentals of Material Science, Basic Civil Engineering, Basic Electrical Engineering, Fundamentals of Computers and Fundamentals of Chemistry.
The Syllabus for Part III of the TANCET Question Paper for students applying for admission to M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. is an extended section covering all the respective 14 parts of specialization that the candidate wishes to opt for while answering. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to appear for TANCET Entrance Exam for admission to M.E./M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan courses a candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in the relevant field and obtained at least 50% (45% in the case of candidates belonging to reserved category) in the qualifying degree examination, as following:
(i) B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. Degree Programme.
(ii) B.Pharm./B.Sc. (Agri./Forestry/Horticulture/Fishery) Degree Programme.
(iii) Master’s Degree in the relevant branch of Science/Arts, which are prescribed.
(iv) M.Sc. (5Years) Integrated Degree Programme.
(v) B.Sc. 3 Years (Computer Science/Information Technology) and M.Sc. 2 Years (Computer Science/Information Technology).
(vi) MCA (3 Years) after 10+2 Years H.Sc. + 3 Years Bachelor’s Degree.
(vii) MCA Lateral Entry (2 Years) after 10+2 years H.Sc. + 3 Years Bachelor’s
degree in BCA or B.Sc. (Information Technology / Computer Science).
Candidates with section ‘A’ & ‘B’ certificate holders and other similar certificate holders of professional bodies or societies (e.g. A.M.I.E.) recognised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India are considered to be equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. Degree holders only with 2 Years regular full time Teaching experience/Industrial experience (an experience certificate is to be produced by the candidates with AMIE Qualification) in the relevant field after successful completion of the course including project work. Hence such candidates can apply for TANCET Entrace Exam for admission to M.E./M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan. The pre-requisite qualifications for such candidates are as following:
a) 10 + 2 years H.Sc. + AMIE (with 2 years experience).
(b) 10 + 3 Years diploma (awarded by the State Board of Technical Education) + AMIE (with
2 years experience).
It is also to be Noted that:
(1) Those candidates that are admitted through Lateral Entry in degree courses are not eligible except,
B.E./B.Tech. and MCA degree courses.
(2) Candidates with B.E./B.Tech. Degrees obtained through Distance mode/Week end courses are not eligible.
(3) Candidates with MCA/M.Sc. degree obtained through week end courses are not eligible. 
(4) Candidates with degree obtained without studying 10th, 12th Std. or 3 years diploma and 3/4 years degree programme are not eligible.
Candidates appearing for the final semester/year examination of the said qualifying degree course except AMIE during April/May 2014 may also apply for TANCET 2014.
The abovementioned eligibility criterion is subject to the approval of State Government of Tamil Nadu.
Also candidates from other states than Tamil Nadu can appear for TANCET Entrance Exam, but admission to any course is subject to the eligibility conditions of that particular course as laid down by the admitting Authority/University.
