India's First Nuclear Reactor was the Apsara reactor, designed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay and built with assistance from the United Kingdom (which also provided the initial fuel supply consisting of 80 percent enriched uranium). It was also the first nuclear reactor in Asia. Apsara first went critical on August 4, 1956. Apsara is a light water moderated swimming pool-type reactor with a maximum power output of one megawatt thermal (MWT), loaded with enriched uranium as fuel.
