Bangladesh was erstwhile East Pakistan before attaining independence through the liberation war of 1971, helped by India, from the oppressive rule of Pakistan. Pakistan never could digest the humiliation of this defeat and hence left the Commonwealth of Nations on 30th January 1972 in protest of its recognition of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation and later rejoined in 1989.
